save money by bringing your own lunch

Bag a Lunch and Save Some Bucks

In Featured, Financial Resources, Healthy Eating, News by Priscilla Matthews

One of the best ways to save money is to spend less. A simple change like bringing a bagged lunch to work a few times a week could save you some bucks – maybe some big bucks.

How Much Could I Save?

The amount you save by bagging your lunch depends on a few things, including how often you bag your own lunch, and how much you spend making it. Those choices are yours!

Let’s look at an example of what you could save if you were to pack your lunch and take it to work every day, instead of eating out or grabbing a sandwich at the convenience store on your way to work.

Do the Calculation

Let’s do a savings calculation:

  • Going out to lunch every day costs about $6.50.
  • Packing a lunch might cost only $3.00. that’s a savings of $3.50 each day!
  • There are usually 20 workdays each month, so:
  • 3.50 x 20 = $70 savings each month.
  • $70 x 12 = $840 savings each year.
  • In 4 years, you could save $3,340.

You could save around $70.00 a month in this scenario. That’s 840.00 a year!  $840.00 you could put toward something you really need or want.  Like a different apartment, or a new laptop.  Or even being able to go out with friends.

Wow, that’s a lot! Take a few minutes and use this calculator from 360 degrees of financial literacy to see how much you could save. You’ll also find out how much you could have if you invested the savings!

Good luck, and enjoy your extra money!
