Benefits Counseling:

For persons with disabilities considering employment, the potential loss of benefits is one of the most common barriers. Disability benefits are key to health care, independent living, and even survival.

This section of the Toolkit provides basic information on disability benefit programs and associated work incentives. Work incentives are provisions designed to help protect your benefits while working. Disability benefits can be very complicated and are often interrelated. A Care Manager who facilitates and supports an employment process does not need to be a benefit specialist. However, some basic information can go a long way in helping a person with a disability realize that people on benefits can and do work.

For more complete benefits information a Care Manager can contact a Work Incentive Benefits Specialist (WIBS) for a Benefits Analysis. A Benefits Analysis is a written summary of an individual's benefits, how work earnings can affect these benefits. Particular emphasis is given to work incentives.
