Assistive Technology News, Notes & Ponderings...

Photo of PhilHi, I'm Phil, the Assistive Technology contact at ERI and this is my page to showcase some of the latest and greatest assistive technologies out there or to share some of my favorites that have been around for a while. I will also from time-to-time share my tips, suggestions, recommendations and success stories.

Highlights: Assistive Technology Tools

TextNet

TextNet is a replacement for a TTY machine, and is an internet-based phone system, operating with existing technology. Even people who don't have a TTY can use it – it's inexpensive and comes with training, which is based out of Chicago, and is available for support 24-7. D.J. said that their director would be happy to talk to the DPNs about this equipment. The cost is $100 for one port, plus installation and training fees. The ongoing cost is $120-130 per month for 4 centers. Go to www.textnet.net for more information.

RESNA: Alternative Financing Technical Assistance Project

http://www.resna.org/AFTAP/index.html

The Alternative Financing Technical Assistance Project is a sponsored project of RESNA, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America. This includes Alternative Financing Programs funded under Title III of the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 (P.L. 105-394) and Access to Telework Loan programs funded under the New Freedom Initiative.

Alternative Financing Programs offer more than affordable access to assistive technology for people with disabilities. These federal-state loan programs open doorways to enhanced participation in family and community life, education, employment and health care for individuals with disabilities by expanding options for obtaining and, ultimately, using assistive technology.
